Immunoglobulins are large, Y-shaped proteins produced by B-cells that are used by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects such as bacteria and viruses. The immunoglobulin recognizes a unique part of each antigen. Each tip of the Y shape targets an epitope on the foreign antigen, allowing the two molecules to bind with extreme precision. Using this binding mechanism, an antibody can identify and label a microbe or another infected cell for attack by the immune system, or in some cases neutralize the target itself by binding to and blocking one or more of its processes. The production of immunoglobulins is the main function of the humoral immune system, there are five distinct classes based on structural and antigenic properties: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM.
