When the immune system is challenged by an antigen, multiple B-cells are activated. Each B-cell will target a different antigenic factor (epitope) on the antigen molecule, this results in a large amount of antibodies being produced all targeting different specific epitopes of the same antigen, these antibodies are referred to as polyclonal and are generally purified from the serum of an immunised host animal. Polyclonal antibodies can be raised in any of the common mammalian and avian hosts but are generally raised in the larger host animals such as rabbits and goats for increased antiserum production. Compared to monoclonals, polyclonal antibodies are cheaper to produce in larger quantities over a shorter timescale.
