Description |
RIA kit for the detection of HIAA5 in the research laboratory |
Background |
5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA) is the main metabolite of serotonin in the human body. In chemical analysis of urine samples, 5HIAA is used to determine the body's levels of serotonin. Since 5HIAA is a metabolite of serotonin, testing is most frequently performed for the diagnosis of carcinoid tumors of the enterochromaffin (Kultschitzsky) cells of the small intestine, which release large amounts of serotonin. |

Assay Information |
The 5HIAA RIA is a new and simple method for the quantification of this important marker of carcinoid syndrome in small urine samples. The assay procedure follows the basic principle of radioimmunoassays, involving competition between a radioactive and a nonradioactive antigen for a fixed number of antibody binding sites. The amount of 125Ilabelled antigen bound to the antibody is inversely proportional to the analyte concentration of the sample. When the system is in equilibrium, the antibody bound radioactivity is precipitated with a second antibody in the presence of polyethylene glycol. The precipitate is counted in a gamma counter. Quantification of unknown samples is achieved by comparing their activity with a reference curve prepared with known standards. |
