Whereas a primary antibody is raised against a specific target antigen such as proteins, peptides or other antigenic molecules, secondary antibodies are raised to bind to primary antibodies or their associated fragments and regions. The high specificity of secondary antibodies makes them extremely useful in laboratory and industrial applications. Secondary antibodies are produced in monoclonal and polyclonal forms with specificity for the vast majority of primary antibodies and their fragments. Fluorescent/radioactive/molecular labels, tags and probes conjugated to secondary antibodies further increase their usefulness in laboratory applications.
Indirect detection of a target molecule with secondary antibodies by binding to a primary antibody which in turn binds to the target has the advantage of massively increased sensitivity due to the extra signal amplification from multiple secondary antibodies binding to the single primary antibody; this has valuable applications in quantitative and qualitative assays, purification processes and more.
