GFAP antibodies are commonly used as an astrocyte marker for neuronal studies. Astrocytes, also known collectively as astroglia have a pivotal function in the process of scarring and repair following brain and spinal cord injury as well as providing supporting nutrients to surrounding nervous tissues. They have a characteristic star shape and are most abundant cell type in the human brain. GFAP is the most well known astrocyte marker, but S100 and Survivin are also commonly used targets.
GFAP or Glial Fibrillary Acidic protein is a member of the intermediate filament family of proteins which form networks in order to provide structural support to cells. GFAP filaments form one of the major intermediate filament proteins of mature astrocytes, a sub-type of glial cells in the central nervous system and the most abundant cell of the human brain. GFAP is often used as a marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development and although its function is not fully understood, glial fibrillary acidic protein most likely participates in the control of shape, movement, and function of astroglial cells as well as cytoplasmic transduction of signals and cellular repair following central nervous system injury.
There are several serious neurological disorders associated with improper GFAP expression including Alexanders disease, glial scarring and several other neurodegenerative conditions.
Fitzgerald Industries offers a range of high quality GFAP antibodies in both monoclonal and polyclonal formats for use in a wide range of immunodiagnostic procedures including ELISA, Flow Cytometry, Immunocytochemistry and more.
Some of our most popular GFAP antibodies include:
GFAP antibody - This mouse monoclonal GFAP antibody clone 6A6 is one of our most popular neuroscience antibodies. It is specific for human GFAP and has been validated for use in ELISA, Immunofluorescence, Immunohistochemistry and Western blot applications.
