General Information

Biological Significance Gc-globulin (Group-specific component globulin), also known as vitamin D binding protein (DBP), is a multifunctional plasma glycoprotein. It has a molecular mass of 51 kDa and is structually related to serum albumin. One of the most important functions of Gc-globulin is to act as an actin scavenger. Actin is the most abundant protein in eukaryotic cells and is released into circulation by dying cells. Here it form filaments which may trigger intravascular coagulation, if not rapidly removed.
