General Information

Biological Significance Rubella is transmitted by the respiratory route. The incubation period is 13 to 20 days, during which a viraemia occurs and virus disseminates throughout the body. In children the onset is abrupt with the appearance of the rash. In adults a prodromal phase may be present with fever and malaise for a day or two before the rash develops. The rash is typically a maculopapular rash, which first appears on the face and then spreads to the trunk and the limbs. The rash seldom lasts more than 3 days. The exact mechanism of how the rash is induced is uncertain but an immunopathological mechanism may be present. Lymphadenopathy may precede the rash by up to a week and persists up to 2 weeks after the rash has gone.
